Storm-Damaged Reserve Native Restoration - From Community Concern to Ecological Recovery

A severe storm event tore through the reserve, flattening large sections of forest and leaving the landscape abruptly exposed. In the aftermath, broom rapidly colonised the disturbed ground, growing over six feet high and dominating the site. With no restoration plan in place, the community became increasingly upset, they had lost a forest they cared deeply about, and the reserve was now transitioning into a weed‑infested open space. They wanted to be involved in restoring it, but lacked direction, structure, and clarity on what was ecologically appropriate.

I stepped in to provide leadership and a practical pathway forward. The first priority was addressing the broom infestation. The site underwent targeted weed control, broom was sprayed, cut down, and managed systematically to reduce seed spread and create a workable foundation for replanting.

With the site stabilised, I developed a staged, community‑supported replanting plan. The approach focused on bulk planting in defined stages, each designed to rebuild structure, suppress weeds, and give the community meaningful involvement. Species were selected for suitability to the site’s new exposure, soil conditions, and long‑term resilience, ensuring the planting could establish successfully without unrealistic maintenance demands.

Each stage brought the community together with volunteers planting large numbers of native species under clear guidance and support. This structure gave the community ownership while ensuring the work aligned with ecological best practice.

The results were clear. Weed pressure dropped significantly, survival rates improved, and the reserve began transitioning away from broom dominance toward a stable, developing native ecosystem. The community regained confidence, seeing tangible progress and understanding how their involvement contributed to long‑term recovery.

This project demonstrates my capability in restoration planning, weed management, community engagement, and designing practical, achievable planting programmes that turn damaged landscapes back toward resilience.
