How ParkHort came about

ParkHort Consultancy began long before it had a name. It started during years spent on the tools - gardening, landscaping, nursery work - seeing firsthand how plants behave, how maintenance really works, and how small decisions can shape a landscape for years. Later, in local government, those early lessons became impossible to ignore. Managing horticultural assets meant watching the same problems appear across parks, businesses, and developments: plant failures, poor species choices, and designs that looked good on paper but collapsed under real maintenance conditions. Every season brought the same frustrations, the same avoidable costs, and the same conversations about why things weren’t working.

What became clear wasn’t a lack of care, it was a lack of early horticultural insight. Simple issues were turning into expensive problems, and teams were left carrying the burden of maintenance that could have been prevented with better decisions at the start.

At the same time, planning and leading restoration projects and working alongside community groups highlighted something else: people want their landscapes to succeed and they want to be involved. When they have the right guidance, their projects thrive, weeds are controlled, native planting establishes well, and communities feel proud of what they’ve achieved. Those successes showed what’s possible when expertise and practical support are available.

ParkHort grew from that realisation: that landscapes across New Zealand could perform better, cost less, and last longer if someone stepped in to bridge the gap between design, horticulture, and maintenance. Today, ParkHort Consultancy exists to provide that clarity, helping clients make planting decisions they can trust, avoid costly mistakes, and create landscapes that thrive long‑term, not just on day one.

Meet Joelle - From Hands‑On Horticulture to Technical Leadership

My journey in horticulture began with soil under my nails and secateurs in my back pocket. For years I worked on the tools - gardening, landscaping, nursery work, and maintaining high‑quality landscapes across private properties and retirement villages. Those early roles taught me the realities of maintenance: what thrives, what struggles, and how small decisions can shape a landscape for years.

Over the past 15 years, I’ve worked across almost every corner of the industry. I’ve supported garden centres, delivered landscaping projects, maintained retirement village grounds, led restoration work, and eventually moved into local government as part of the reserves team. That shift into council work expanded my perspective from individual gardens to district‑wide horticultural assets, compliance, contractor performance, and long‑term planning.

At the very beginning of my career, I completed a Diploma in Horticulture and a Diploma in Horticulture Management through Lincoln University, and I’m now studying toward a Master’s in Parks Management. These qualifications have built a strong technical foundation beneath my practical experience, helping me bridge the gap between design, horticulture, and the realities of long‑term maintenance.

I’ve seen firsthand why landscapes succeed, why they fail, and how to prevent costly mistakes before they happen. That blend of hands‑on horticulture and technical leadership is what I bring to ParkHort Consultancy, clear advice, practical solutions, and planting systems designed to thrive long‑term.

Behind all of this is my family: my husband Tim (who deserves a shout‑out for the drone shots on this website), our daughter, son, two cats and our dog, the crew that keeps me grounded and supported while ParkHort continues to grow.
